IFRS Profit vs. UAE Corporate Taxable Income: Why Reconciliation Matters
Corporate Tax
ZUWAYLA Editorial Team
Quick answer: Under the UAE Corporate Tax Law, accounting income is generally the starting point for determining Taxable Income. It is not necessarily the final amount on which Corporate Tax is calculated. Article 20 requires the relevant adjustments, and businesses should document how their financial results become the tax computation.
Start with the correct accounting result
A business may prepare financial statements using IFRS or, where permitted, IFRS for SMEs, subject to the applicable rules. The financial statements provide the initial accounting income for the relevant Tax Period.
The Corporate Tax computation then considers adjustments for items governed by tax-specific provisions. The applicable treatment can also depend on elections, exemptions, reliefs and the facts of each transaction.
What can create a difference?
Exempt income and tax reliefs
Some items recognised in accounting income may qualify for an exemption or other treatment under the Corporate Tax Law. The conditions for each exemption or relief must be examined; an accounting label is not sufficient.
Nondeductible expenses
An expense recognised in profit or loss may be subject to tax deductibility limitations. The purpose of the expenditure, its relationship to the business, and specific restrictions matter.
Interest and financing arrangements
Interest expense may be affected by the general interest deduction limitation and specific provisions. Intercompany financing can also raise related-party pricing questions under Article 34.
Provisions and unrealised items
The accounting recognition of a provision, expected loss or unrealised gain or loss does not establish the final tax treatment. The tax computation may require separate consideration of the relevant rule and any valid election.
Related-party transactions
Management fees, financing charges and other intercompany transactions need to be supported by their commercial substance and the applicable arm’s length principles. The accounting invoice is one item of evidence, not the entire analysis.
Why deferred tax is not the same as the Corporate Tax payable computation
Deferred tax accounting under IAS 12 addresses future tax consequences of temporary differences and other recognition matters. It should not be confused with the current tax computation used to determine the amount payable under UAE Corporate Tax rules.
A finance team should reconcile current tax expense, deferred tax balances where applicable, and the Corporate Tax Return with the correct supporting schedules.
A practical accounting-to-tax reconciliation workflow
Confirm the reporting entity and Tax Period.
Reconcile the Trial Balance to the final financial statements.
Identify all material book-to-tax differences.
Link each proposed adjustment to its legal basis and working paper.
Validate elections, exemptions, reliefs and any applicable limitations.
Review related-party transactions and Free Zone positions separately where relevant.
Reconcile the final Taxable Income and tax payable calculations to the return.
Retain a signed-off computation and an evidence trail that a separate reviewer can reproduce.
An illustrative example
Assume a company reports AED 1,000,000 accounting profit. A tax reviewer identifies one adjustment increasing taxable income by AED 100,000 and another permitted adjustment reducing it by AED 50,000. Before any other adjustments, the resulting figure would be AED 1,050,000.
This is a simplified mathematical illustration, not a tax determination. Whether any specific item is deductible, exempt or adjustable requires review under the current law. The example deliberately does not apply a Corporate Tax rate because the rate and treatment depend on the taxpayer and the tax position.
Frequently asked questions
Is accounting profit always the same as Taxable Income? No. Article 20 provides for adjustments when determining Taxable Income.
Does an IFRS-compliant entry automatically become tax deductible? No. A tax-specific provision may alter or restrict the treatment.
Can a reviewer rely only on the final financial statements? For material transactions, the underlying ledger, contracts and working papers may be needed to support the tax reconciliation.
